Discussion:  Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the cause in approximately 50% of cases of sudden death in athletes. 

Coronary artery disease is the number one cause in patients older than age 35. 

The classic murmur of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a harsh, crescendo–decrescendo murmer radiating to the base, but not the neck. The intensity of this murmur will increase when outflow obstruction is increased, for example, with the Valsalva maneuver or standing from a supine position.
